Accessible/Accessibility

When we designed the guidelines of X-Plain in 1994, we aimed at developing tutorials that are accessible to all patients. As Dr. Haddad, our Medical Director indicated then, "A doctor cannot limit a service that is essential for informed consent to educated patients and to patients with no disability."

From the first design drafts, X-Plain was conceived with accessibility in mind. Language was simplified for patients who are functionally-illiterate (which is estimated at 20% in the U.S.), text was fully narrated and rendered open-captioned for patients with visual impairments, large font size (24 pt) were used for the elderly population; touch-screen technology and screen design were adopted for patients with no computer experience.

Patients with cognitive challenges such as attention deficit disorder or with difficulties understanding abstract concepts, could benefit from X-Plain as it reinforces the medical concepts through a variety of learning channels by using text, illustrations, animations, and narration.
