X-Plain Informed Consent and Risk Management
X-Plain pre-op tutorials are designed with the following 7 risk-management guidelines:
- Address all areas of the informed consent process: the diagnosis, the alternative treatments, the recommended treatment and its benefits, the risks and complications of treatment and no treatment.
- Ensure that all patients can benefit from X-Plain by simplifying the text, using touch technology for patients who have no computer experience, and narrating the text for patients who cannot read.
- Ensure that all patients have seen and completed the same information. This is accomplished by using multimedia to maintain attention and keeping the presentation at the patient’s pace.
- Ensure that all patients understand the information by asking the patient questions and giving corrective responses. Emphasize questions that are high-risk areas and where patients are known to have misconceptions or unrealistic expectations.
- Design X-Plain to be implemented at the point of care and integrated with existing clinical processes without burdening the healthcare staff.
- Document the patient education session in paper and electronic formats, and track which tutorial the patient has seen.
- Provide X-Plain clients with legal assistance during legal proceedings, by providing a
playback of what the patient has seen.
