The Patient Education Institute is committed to helping patients of all literacy levels and educational backgrounds understand critical health information. Our instructional designers and health literacy specialists are dedicated to closing the patient-provider communication gap and empowering patients to become active members of their healthcare teams.
Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use health information and services in order to make informed decisions. Even people with high general literacy and advanced levels of education may struggle to understand complicated medical information. Low health literacy not only affects a person’s ability to take their medication correctly, make treatment choices, or manage chronic conditions; it can also affect their overall health and wellness over their lifetime and increase the risk of early death.
Patients who are managing multiple health conditions or taking multiple medications are most at-risk for complications caused by low health literacy. The stress caused by an illness, recent trauma, or serious diagnosis can also negatively affect a person’s ability to comprehend important medical information and make decisions.
X-Plain is designed to serve patients of diverse literacy levels and backgrounds by simplifying medical information with clear language and multimedia. X-Plain is available in English, Spanish, and Arabic. X-Plain Programs:
X-Plain supports patient-provider communication by laying a foundation of knowledge for patients and directing them to ask relevant questions. The programs easily integrate into the workflow of a healthcare facility; they can be reviewed before, during, or after an appointment or at the patient’s bedside. Relevant patient education can be sent to the patient’s mobile device, computer, or email address. It can also be made available on the health care facility’s website or patient portal.
