If you do not agree to all of these Terms, do not use the Website. The Patient Education Institute, Inc. (PEI, We, Our) may update these Terms at any time. Your continued usage of the Website will mean you accept these changes.
Permitted Use of Content and Restrictions
The text, illustrations, animations, videos, and narration on the Website and X-Plain Lite (Content) are copyrighted by PEI under USA and international laws. We authorize you to view the material on your device for your personal and non-commercial use. You may print a single copy of the Content provided you do not delete our copyright notice. We update the Content on the Website and keep it up-to-date. You agree that any printed material will become outdated with time.
- You may not use the Content to benefit financially.
- You may not co-brand, frame, or link to the Content or Website in a way that display a logo, trademark, name, or other sign of identification of any party in such a manner reasonably likely to give the impression that such other party has licensed or has the right to use Content. To co-brand Content with your name and logo (or those of a third party), contact the Patient Education Institute (PEI).
- If you are a healthcare provider, you may refer patients and their families to pages on X-Plain® Lite, but you may not document electronically that a user had taken, completed or understood the Content of a specific health topic.
- You may not reproduce, transmit, publish, or distribute the Content to any third party without our express written consent.
- You may not use Content for scraping, copying, or any form of data extraction intended for use in training large language models (LLMs) or similar artificial intelligence systems without first obtaining a license to do so from us. This prohibition extends to all AI companies, entities, and individuals seeking to use our Content for the purpose of training, developing, or enhancing AI-driven technologies.
Use of the Content in any way other than the use permitted in this section is prohibited. If you violate these Terms, your permission to use the Content terminates immediately, and may result in legal action to enforce our intellectual property rights.

The revenues of PEI are earned from (a) licensing its health education software, X-Plain, to its clients; (b) royalties from partners and value-added resellers; (c) from services related to hosting, integration, customization, and documentation of the licensed software, X-Plain; and (d) from advertisement revenues on X-Plain Lite.

As you visit Website you may link to the websites of our clients and partners (hospitals, outpatient centers, clinics, insurance plans, ministries of health, health IT vendors, etc.) Our software, X-Plain®, appears on these third-party websites. These licensees do not have any influence regarding the Content of X-Plain unless one of the licensee’s professional healthcare staff is a member of the Medical Advisory Board.
As you visit Website, you may link to X-Plain Lite. Advertisements appear on X-Plain Lite. Clicking on an ad may take you to third-party websites. We do not recommend or endorse the content, products, or services of third-party websites. You agree that Content on X-Plain Lite is provided to help you understand as you communicate with your healthcare providers. Any other reliance on any information provided by PEI through X-Plain Lite is solely at your own risk.
We are not responsible for the content or the experience of third-party websites. These Terms of use apply to Our Website; third-party websites have their own terms of use and privacy policies. You agree to use third-party websites at your own risk.
Our editorial content is not influenced by the funding sources. Our X-Plain Lite website hosts Google sponsored ads and links. We do not control the Google ads’ content. Our X-Plain Lite website hosts words and banners advertising.

General
You expressly agree that exclusive jurisdiction for any dispute with PEI, or in any way relating to your use of the Website resides in the courts of the State of Iowa in the United States of America.
If any provision of this Agreement is found to be invalid by any court having competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of such provision shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of this Agreement, which shall remain in full force and effect.
The terms of this Agreement constitute the entire agreement between you and PEI with respect to the use of Content.
